During the final lap of the Daytona 500, a legend was lost. It is with deepest remorse that we bid a farewell to one of the hardest charging, greatest drivers our sport has ever seen. We would also like to send our  

thoughts and prayers to all of his family and friends, as well as to the millions of loyal fans of the 3 car. Over the course of this week, we will be putting together several tributes to the 7 time Winston Cup Champion, to honor his memory. In the meantime Thats Racing.com has a great slideshow here. Virtual1 is proud to present another great  feature to the Catch Can On Line magazine. Echoes of Thunder is a look back on some of the legendary drivers of the past as well as anecdotes, stories, photos and anything else that happens to be on the mind of our resident racing  

historian and curmudgeon at large, Jerry Sims. Echoes of Thunder will be a monthly feature here and will trace the roots of racing, both in actual events and as it was portrayed in the movie industry. Much as the name implies, we will look back to the classic films of the era such as Thunder in Carolina all the way to Days of Thunder. In addition we will recall memories of NASCAR® events held before Junior Johnson and Bill France introduced Winston to their events. We will pay homage to some of the pioneers of the sport, "Tiny" Lund, "Fireball" Roberts, Curtis Turner, and even some drivers you may never have heard of. The focus of this will not be of just the legends of NASCAR®, but of the men and women of our sport on the local levels as well, names such as Bunk Moore, "Stick" Elliott, Tommy Jordan and a host of others.
